History
Petaluma may be relatively small, but it's made its mark on California history. The Coast Miwok tribe made a home here for centuries before an 1834 land grant gave the area to Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. When gold was discovered in the Sierra Nevadas in 1849 white settlers from the east flooded the region. In addition to mining, many of the pioneers farmed the region's rich soil. Throughout the 1860s the city was one of California's largest. Eventually, it would earn the label "Egg Capital of the World" thanks to the amazing proliferation of chicken farmers and processing facilities. Agriculture still thrives here, but so do high-tech companies and many other business ventures.
Parks and Recreation
People living in homes in Petaluma enjoy fantastic parks and recreation facilities. The city oversees dozens of parks with features like playgrounds, sports fields, hiking trails, and off-leash dog areas. Portions of some of the parks are available on a reservation basis for holding birthdays, reunions, or other special events. Several recreation centers are available where people of all ages can take a class or participate in community activities. There are also public swimming pools and a marina.
Attractions and Activities
If you choose real estate here, you'll want to visit the Arts Center with its wonderful exhibits and events. The Mystic Theatre is the place to experience live music while the region's history is on display at the remarkably well-preserved Adobe State Historic Park. In the lively downtown quarter, people enjoy shopping, dining, and live entertainment. Active folks will love the yacht club and the Rooster Run Golf Club.
Events
The Art & Garden Festival blooms each July and everyone gathers for the Butter & Egg Days Festival in April. A chili cook-off, harvest days celebration, and the arrival of Santa's riverboat are other colorful events.
